Conference Review
.The following is written by Mira Khalaf, Committee Lead for Wellbeing at WSD, and serves as a summary of our first ever WeEvolve Wellbeing conference.
"On the 17th of March we conducted the first ever Well-being interschool conference here at WSD. It took us days to bring WeEvolve to life and I am so glad we did. This conference has been a confidence booster and a phenomenal push to us students to use our own voice and thoughts. We are so pleased to say that we had approximately 50 attendees registered for the conference from 8 different GEMS Schools. WeEvolve was based around the WSD 7Cs and the conference focused on three main areas: collaboration, communication, and critical thinking! Furthermore, WeEvolve had 3 main objectives: Target, Connect and Produce.
Students from various schools collaborated altogether for one day to talk about critical topics around mental health and Well-being and all the students were able to provide several courses of action to tackle the issues they mentioned in their committee. We also wanted to ensure that each student gets a diversified understanding of wellness through effective brainstorming between the team members, where students were able to develop an idea that is well studied and reviewed. The conference focused on developing individuals across GEMS schools and empowering students to use their voices, and we hope that the student delegates and teacher representatives found this program enriching and engaging the youth of today.
The one-day conference comprised of 2 committee sessions and 1 workshop. We started our conference with our Principal and CEO; Mr. Matthew Lecuyer and then we welcomed our astonishing guest speaker from mBrain.me; Ms. Wendy Shaw. She spoke about Heart Connecting to positively impact your Mental Health! We then moved to committee session 1 for ice breakers, brainstorming and committee topic orientation. We then moved on to our workshop where we warmed up by a
2-miunte mediation session and then heard from an alumni; Gwyneth, from WSD, talk about her journey as a Psychology student. We finally wrapped up our workshop with a quick discussion between all the student delegates and the student leadership team at WSD. The students then met again in committee session 2 to finalise their presentations! During the presentations, each team was given 10 minutes to present, all the students finished before their time ends, which was very delightful to witness.
I hope that all the students were able to gain a new skill or information from WeEvolve. Many thanks to the student delegates and teachers who collaborated and helped us bring this idea to life with so much energy and excitement!
Finally, I would like to thank our leadership and executive team behind the success of our conference Mr. Matthew,
Mr. Dan, and Ms. Shalini. Thank you so much for allowing me to make this conference happen, it wouldn’t have been possible without your continuous support and encouragement. And a big thank you to the students of WSD for all the hard work invested and for leading your committees so professionally."
